These Otters were at a boat landing on the Clearwater River. We had pulled over to take a photo of a bald eagle. As i was taking shots of the eagle, I kept hearing noises below me. I had to find out who was making all that noise, so I walked down the boat ramp to get a view, and I saw these otters. There were actually five of them, but they would not stay still long enough for me to get a picture of all of them together. They were playing and chewing on the heads of salmon that fisherman had cleaned, and left the heads and skeletons. They were having a great time and barely paid any attention to us.

This is a painting of a Cutthroat Trout being released back into the Clearwater River. It was caught on a large dry fly (can’t tell you which one?). It hit the fly hard and ran into the strong current. After an exciting fight that took us a bit downstream, my son and I landed this beautiful trout. My 14 year old son took the reference photos for this painting. “Good job, Son!” I wanted to capture the golden quality of the sunlight, not only on this magnificent fish, but on the river bottom as well. It is mesmerizing to see the light dancing so brightly in such clear water.

This piece was done using a brush for the dark background and a palette knife only on the hawk. It is a young Red-tailed Hawk that hunts near our house. I took its picture as the sun was coming out after a wet, rainy morning. The bird was perched with its wings outstretched to dry its feathers. The hawks’ feathers may have been soaked and hanging; the eyes, however, were alive as ever. They were still hunting.
